Bart moku hanga1/1/2024 ![]() ![]() Lecture by Yoonmi Nam, associate professor of visual art, University of Kansas, Monday, March 25, at 7:00 p.m.Woodblock printing in Japan (木版画, moku-hanga) is a technique best known for its use in the ukiyo-e artistic genre of single sheets, but it was also used for printing books in the same period. Unlike western woodblock printing that employs oil-based inks, Japanese mokuhanga is a chemical- and solvent-free process that uses water-based inks, such as watercolors, gouaches and vegetable dyes. Dating back to the 8th century, mokuhanga techniques were first used to print Buddhist texts and images. ![]() Later ukiyo-e prints from the 1800s incorporated mokuhanga to depict vivid battle scenes, actors and courtesans in richly designed silk kimonos, transparent landscapes, and birds and animals from the zodiac. In June of 2011, Melissa Schulenberg and Carole Mathey traveled to Kyoto, Japan, to attend the 1st International Mokuhanga Conference, where they met numerous artists, 12 of whom were invited to participate in an exhibition at St. The exhibition’s title, Riding the Great Wave, refers to The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, or simply The Great Wave (ca. Melissa also initiated an exchange portfolio, 20 Artists/20 Views, which includes work by international artists from the mokuhanga conference.ġ830), the iconic ukiyo-e print by the Japanese artist Hokusai. There was no predetermined theme, and artists responded to the call with images of waterscapes, studies of color and light, and abstract forms from nature. The exhibition also includes a selection of traditional Japanese woodcuts, with accompanying curatorial text panels by students from Flint Professor Dorothy Limouze’s special topics seminar on museums and collections. Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), Japanese, 1786-1865, Melissa Schulenberg is an associate professor of art and art history and teaches printmaking, drawing and artists’ books. Carole Mathey is the assistant director of the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery.Moku hanga is a traditional Japanese form of woodblock printmaking notable for black outlines, vibrant colors, and angled perspectives (think of Hokusai and Hirosada). In modern times the images may have changed, but the process remains much the same, and its simplicity is very appealing, requiring not much more than a block of wood, a cutting tool (gouge), ink, and paper. The image, a type of relief print, is produced by carving away everything except the lines to be printed. To make a print, the block’s surface is saturated with water color and nori paste, and then slightly dampened paper is laid down and pressed with a buren. Moku hanga abstract registration#įor multiple colors, multiple blocks are carved, with exact registration (kento) marks on each block. As the images are all hand-pulled, moku hanga prints don’t need a press, and using water-based inks makes this for an easy clean-up. McClains Printmaking Supplies is a good source for tools, blocks, and books about the process.Ĭarving can take a long time, but it’s an opportunity for contemplation, for “being in the moment” with your image, and the blocks eventually become works of art, along with the prints. San Francisco-based Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) selected Berkeley artist Miwako Nishizawa, born in Kyoto Japan, to create pieces for its 2016 poster art series using the moku hanga woodblock technique. Here are my first prints using this process. ![]()

Best rv pet temperature monitor1/1/2024 ![]() ![]() Also, remember that all these RV pet temperature monitoring systems require you to have a working cell phone on hand and for you to be in cellular range to receive alerts. Do not leave your pet inside your RV if temperatures are going to be extreme, even with a monitor. They must be used with human common sense. It’s important to remember that even the best RV pet temperature monitors are only machines. However, these devices can be more costly to run as they do have subscription fees to maintain the mobile service. Cellular Pet Temperature MonitorsĪ cellular pet temperature monitor has its own inbuilt cellular network connection which is usually more reliable than a WiFi connection when on the road. The advantage of using a WiFi monitor combined with a mobile hotspot is that you can also connect other devices (e.g., laptops and smartphones) to the hotspot and make use of the internet connection for entertainment or business purposes. So, we recommend purchasing a mobile hotspot, such as a Verizon Jetpack to ensure a more consistent connection no matter your location.Īfter the initial purchase price, the operational costs of a WiFi sensor tends to be cheaper because you do not have to pay cellular data subscription fees, but the mobile hotspot does incur extra charges. Guest networks at RV parks are notoriously unreliable and sometimes require you to reconnect every couple of hours manually. ![]() In order to operate effectively, it requires a reliable internet connection. A WiFi pet temperature monitor works by connecting to the Internet via WiFi to send you alerts and relay information. ![]() Halloween witch riding broom1/1/2024 ![]() ![]() ![]() Significantly, though, any such admission by a "witch" would have been made under torture.Īccording to Sharpe, twilight flight has been a remarkably persistent cultural reference, going back as far as the cult of the Roman goddess Diana. It's there in the Malleus Maleficarum, with witches using the fat of murdered children as the basic ingredient," says University of York historian Professor Jim Sharpe. "Many writers of demonological tracts were convinced that witches flew with the aid of ointments. Rather the opposite, in fact: "As far as I'm aware, the material culture of witchcraft, in terms of surviving artefacts, relates mainly to anti-bewitchment measures – amulets and such like – made by cunning folk."ĭid the ointment even exist? It's hard to be sure. "Even among those few who did confess to witchcraft, there's not much evidence that they made potions for flight, or for other nefarious purposes," he says. Did some of those accused of witchcraft really apply flying ointment in this way?ĭr Andrew Sneddon, a historian at the University of Ulster, is sceptical. But the image of hallucinating women astride brooms is so highly sexualised as to seem comic. So the ointment may well have been capable of delivering powerful delusions of flight. "Vaginal application would be pretty efficient, and the effects of the drugs would be noticeable quite rapidly." ![]() "Mucous membranes are particularly good at transporting drugs - that's why cocaine is snorted," he adds. "Alkaloids go through your skin into the bloodstream – consider nicotine patches." Tropane alkaloids easily cross the blood-brain barrier, acting on the central nervous system. "Ointment would have been very effective as a delivery method for scopolamine," says Dr Randolph Arroo, head of research at Leicester School of Pharmacy, De Montfort University. It has been argued that this drug-induced delusion lies at the the root of the myth of witches' flight. As the drugs took effect, delusions of flight may have ensued while astride the broomstick's handle. If contemporary accounts are to be believed, "witches" applied this hallucinogenic ointment with the handle of a broom, smearing the ointment onto the length of the broom and then rubbing the handle against their genitals and even inserting it into the vagina. But high doses can lead to antimuscarinic syndrome: a state of altered consciousness often characterised by delirium and intense hallucinations. Low doses of these chemicals will induce a dry mouth and dilated pupils – and relieve the nausea of travel sickness. Scopolamine and its close cousin atropine are " muscarinic antagonists" – they bind to receptors in the nervous system that would, ordinarily, bind to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. You will have created the green ointment of de Laguna's alleged witch. Tropane alkaloids are unremarkable additions to a modern medicine cabinet, but if you took the raw plant material and pounded it in molten fat, you'd extract an uncontrolled mixture of the alkaloids in their pure, base form. One of these, scopolamine (also known as hyoscine), is the active ingredient of travel-sickness medications such as Boot's Travel Calms and the skin patch Scopoderm. Like its close relatives henbane ( Hyoscymaus niger) and mandrake ( Mandragora officinarum), its leaves and berries are packed with chemicals called tropane alkaloids. Nightshade ( Atropa belladonna) is immediately recognisable for its deep purple fruit and was said to be tended by the Devil himself. Nightshade, henbane and mandrake are some of the most toxic plants in the family Solanaceae. The Spanish court physician Andrés de Laguna, writing in the 16th century, claimed to have taken from the home of a couple accused of witchcraft "a pot full of a certain green ointment … composed of herbs such as hemlock, nightshade, henbane, and mandrake." ![]() ![]() If what I think is true, then the expression "Innocent until proven guilty" should be, "Guilty until proved guilty". It is also my understanding that proven is often used (incorrectly) as the past perfect of prove. "Proven", on the other hand, is an adjective, as in, "He had a proven record as a coach". It is my understanding the verb prove is conjugated prove, proved and has proved. One might ask, however, how else or in what other direction one might look at a future, bright or otherwise, and suggest that we forget about saying where the future lies and say what kind of a future it is: "He has a bright future in appliance sales (or whatever)." the word "forwards" has otherwise almost disappeared except for set phrases like "backwards and forwards," and "forward" is used most of the time as our directional adverb:"He leaned forward until he almost fell off the deck." For instance: "He could have moved left or right, but instead he moved forwards" or "The wheel can only move forwards." In the U.S. ![]() We always use "forward" (no "s") as an adjective: "he sat in the forward seat." As an adverb, we use the the "-s" ending, when there are other possibiities.
